Harry got his first Beardie "Charlie" (Am. Can. Ch. Silverleaf Gifted Artisan HT) in 1976; Ann & Harry were married in 1979. "Charlie" was bred to Harry's bitch "Bonnie"; (Ch. Artisan Silverleaf O' Parcana) producing "Cooper" - World, International, de las Americas, American, Canadian, Mexican Ch. Gaelyn Copper Artisan PT; a top winner in the early days of the breed. Since then, Artisan Beardies has produced nearly 100 show Champions and almost as many herding titled dogs as well. Ann has trained and trialed Beardies in all 3 primary herding programs to titles such as the first two Beardies to earn the WTCH (Working Trial CH) as offered by ASCA, and the first HTCH (Herding Trial CH) as offered by AHBA. Artisan also has many "DC" (Dual Champion) titles earned in AKC's programs; each of these has both the show (conformation) Championship and the Herding Championship in AKC events. At Artisan, litters are infrequent and breeding is always to the breed Standard, which was written to describe the true working dogs in the UK. Dogs can be of any color and are medium sized, lightweight, agile and have easy-care coats. All breeding Beardies are OFA certified free of hip dysplasia; other health issues are addressed as required. Longevity is one important factor in the line, with many Artisan Beardies living on to ages 15 to 17. Puppies are never sold to or through any broker or pet shop; all are sold to private homes on contract with appropriate guarantees. Pets are sold with the AKC's Limited Registration, while show prospects are co-owned by Ann. Here at Gaelyn Glen Farm, the sheep are worked regularly by only the Beardies, although we do have other-breed trials here on occasion. We insist on having our dogs work for a living!
